Rallo – ‘The Pitch’/ ‘Don’t Wake Me’ / ‘Closets’ (2024)
September 10, 2024 | Nicole Mendes | Folk, indie folk | Original article
Raised by a poet and a performer, filmmaker and singer-songwriter Rallo was surrounded by an environment of creativity brimming with a love for performing arts. Soaking in the creativity around here, Rallo quickly built a passion for artistic expression and sparked a fire in her heart for music, poetry and theatre. While she began performing in rock bands during college, she found herself using the visual to bring her creativity to the world. As a filmmaker, director and producer, US-based Rallo has gained international acclaim with her films streaming on AppleTV, Tubi, Amazon, etc. Yet, it is not her films that draw our attention – although, I’m seriously considering checking out one of those films on Tubi tonight – it is her musical endeavours that we are about to explore.
Following her critically acclaimed 2022 EP, Anymore, Rallo picks up her guitar, sits down at the piano and tells us stories with her new singles – ‘The Pitch’, ‘Closets’, and ‘Don’t Wake Me’. Returning with these tracks, all released over the past few months, Bennett captures the vulnerability, fragility and complexity of simply being. Shifting from the optimistic hope of inspirational harmony to the depths of tragedy in trying situations, ‘The Pitch’, ‘Closets’ and ‘Don’t Wake Me’ resonate with audiences on an intimate, profound level.
Penned, composed and performed by Bennett, with production and arrangement by Kevin Spencer Kendrick, engineering and mastering by Stephen Kellner – except ‘Closets’ which was mastered by Kevorkian Mastering – ‘The Pitch’, ‘Closets’ and ‘Don’t Wake Me’ each brings a unique slant to the overall theme of finding duality of life in its grit and glory.
Joined by Kevin Spencer Kendrick (guitar and keyboard), Graham Orbe (bass) and Liam Kerekes (drums), with Rallo on piano, ‘The Pitch’ is a slice of indie-folk flecked by vintage folk in the lines of Joni Mitchell and Carol King. Soft, soothing and laidback, but with a deep sense of heartache, ‘The Pitch’ captures the intricacies of “shifting realities and rules to serve the needs of others”.
Sliding with serenity from ‘The Pitch’ into ‘Don’t Wake Me’, Rallo continues to question reality within a rhythmic harmony – almost dream-like. For me, however, it is ‘Closets’ that defines her exploration of life with weighty boldness. Sharp confidence closes the ethereal expression highlighting the complexity of life from sentimental sincerity to tumultuous diversity. Bennet explains:
“The new songs come from grappling with conflict and difficult moments – trying to find some humour, perspective and harmony out of chaos and toxicity…”

Alyssa Rallo Bennett (aka Rallo) returns to music as a form of storytelling where she started a few moons ago playing guitar and piano to singing with a rock group in college. The daughter of a poet and theatrical mother, filmmaking became the medium where she continues to work as a director, writer and producer. Composing music and writing lyrics has become an oasis as reflected in her songs and debut album ANYMORE which was released on all platforms in May 2022 to critical acclaim:
Call Me Petty premiered on B-Sides & Badlands in Fall 2020:
“Rallo Bennett’s fang-toothed bite swims in a foamy sea of electric guitars that ring out as a rally to push her onward through the terran.”
All Day, premiered on Surviving The Golden Age:
“Rallo reminds me of Nina Gordon from Veruca Salt; fairly clean but have just enough punk sneer…. a perfect pandemic anthem… combines elements of 90s alternative and pop punk to create an energetic mix, featuring crunchy guitars, driving drums.”
Rallo performed 4 album release shows at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC, 76 House in Tappan, NY, and The Bitter End NYC following the release of the album which was arranged and produced by Kevin Kendrick and engineered by Stephen Kellner.
Continuing to write and compose, Rallo has three new singles that she premiered live at The Bitter End, July 21, 2023, and returning to Rockwood Music Hall for a release show July 25, 2024 with The Pitch, Don’t Wake Me, and Closets — just released — with a few more release shows pending at the Bitter End NYC and Pearl Moon in Woodstock, NY.

Alyssa Rallo Bennett (aka Rallo) has release 3 new singles as she marks her return to Rockwood Music Hall where she performed her debut album “ANYMORE” with new releases “The Pitch,” “Don’t Wake Me,” and “Closets.” Rallo will also be heard at upcoming shows at the Bitter End NYC, Rockwood and Pearl Moon in Woodstock, NY. Details will be available on her social media.
Rallo’s new tracks are richly lyrical, reflecting her unique ability to weave intricate narratives with emotive musicality. Each song tells a deeply personal story that resonates with scores of playlists and live listeners on multiple levels. “The new songs come from grappling with conflict and difficult moments – trying to find some humor, perspective, and harmony out of chaos and toxicity,” says Rallo. “My father is a poet, my mother was dramatic and musical, igniting me as a filmmaker and actor, but music has become the niche where I could make poetry, music and sense out of life in a direct and intimate way. Sometimes it’s survival, sometimes it’s therapy, but mostly pure joy.”
“The Pitch” delves into the complexities of living and struggling with shifting realities and rules to serve the needs of others. Alyssa finds humor in this challenging position, bringing a fresh perspective to the human experience. “Don’t Wake Me” explores the desire to remain in a dream state, whether during difficult moments or wonderfully serene ones. Rallo captures the essence of seeing lightness and harmony amidst life’s trials, making this song the heart of her new collection. “Closets” was inspired by a conversation with a close friend about a struggling relationship. When “the closets are taken” was uttered, it sparked Rallo’s imagination, leading to a poignantly personal song wrestling with whether or not a relationship ought to be over or not.
As a collaborator and singer of The Yesters, who released “Kingston City Morgue” last year, their new single “Enough About Love” and “Billy Blue” will be out next month, alongside a new Rallo single “Eggshells and Rollercoasters.”
Rallo’s upcoming release shows are not to be missed promising and intimate and powerful performance that showcases her lyrical prowess and musical talent.
